Classic Peru Expedition
Explore Peru on this 4×4 Self Drive Safari. This 1,500 Km, 10 day, Guided Camper Expedition will take us from Lima to the Paracas National Reserve, the Nazca Lines, the Pampa Galeras Reserve, and into Cuzco, the Capital of the Incas.
1 Lima- Paracas
We meet you and transport you to our base, where we will familiarize you with the operation of the vehicles and equipment. Next stop is the supermaket for supplies and then our first drive 250 Km down the Pan Americana Highway to the Paracas National Reserve. With a couple hours of daylight left, we will explore the Reserve, and pick a campsite on one of its many beaches.
The Paracas National Reserve offers activities in archaeology, paleontology, bird watching, and water sports, especially sailing and windsurf.
Off the coast, are the Ballestas Islands, teeming with cormorants, sea lions, penguins, Peruvian Boobies, and Inca Turns. We start the day with a early speedboat cruise to the islands, a wild ride through the dunes in a buggy, and/or spend the day enjoying all the park has to offer.
3 Paracas to Nazca
Back to the Pan Americana for another 250 Km to the city of Nazca.
The Nazca Lines are a series of large ancient geoglyphs drawn in the desert around 2,000 years ago; there are hundreds of lines and geometric shapes; birds, fish, llamas, jaguars, monkeys, trees, flowers, and human figures are represented.
Our day starts with a exciting flight over the lines, followed by a full day visiting sites such as the Cantayoc Aqueducts, Chauchilla Cemetery, and the adobe city of Cahuachi, all remains of the people who drew the Nazca Lines two thousand years ago.
Now, we leave the desert and drive 350 Km up into the Andes. The first 100 Km will take us from the coast to over 4,000m and the Pampa Galeras National Reserve. Vicuñas, Alpacas, and Llamas in their natural habitats, as this beautiful highway takes thru many different geographical changes. Before arriving at your camp, take a detour to the town of Caraybamba to visit the wonderful Inca terraces which are still in use for farming today.
Tonight we will camp on the grounds of the Tampumayu Lodge where we will relax and enjoy the lodge’s restaurant and bar.
6 Joker Day
All our expeditions have one day set aside for any special interest you might want to persue, be it sporting, cultural, or plain relaxing around camp. Not necessarily on day 6.
7 Chalhuanca to Urubamba
Another full day on the road; 350 Km to Urubamba, the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
If yesterday’s drive was spectacular, todays is even more so. Down into the valleys and up to 4,000 m again, as this beautiful highway takes us thru some spectacular views, archaeological sites, and quaint Andean towns.
8 Sacred Valley
Today we work our way up the Urubamba Valley and visit sites such as Ollantaytambo, the Maras Salt Mines, Moray, and Pisac. From here we will climb to our camp across the road from the Sacsayhuaman fortress, overlooking the city of Cuzco.
9 Rainbow Mountain
Weather will dictate if we make an overnight excursion NE to Paucartambo and the Tres Cruces lookout over the Amazon, or SE for a hike to Rainbow Mountain.
This is a full day visit to Cuzco; Capital of the Incas, and navel of the world. Our camp in Cuzco is across the street from Sacsayhuaman; after visiting this massive fortress, we will walk downhill through the San Blas district to the central Plaza de Armas. Cathedral and museums, colonial and Inca architecture, art galleries, coffee shops and pubs; all of this and more will you experience in this, the oldest continually inhabited capital in America.
